About the MINI Paceman

The MINI Paceman (2013–2016) is a sportier, 3-door version of the MINI Countryman. It was designed to blend the practicality of a crossover with the coupe-like style and driving dynamics expected from the MINI brand. Sharing the same chassis as the Countryman, the Paceman offered a raised driving position, optional ALL4 all-wheel drive, and engine options ranging from the base Cooper to the high-performance John Cooper Works variant. Though stylish and fun to drive, it was ultimately discontinued due to lower-than-expected sales and market overlap with other MINI models.

Common MINI Paceman problems

Paceman models with turbocharged petrol engines, especially the Cooper S and JCW variants, are known for timing chain tensioner failures. This can lead to chain stretch and a rattling noise from the engine on cold start. If not addressed, it can cause major engine damage.
Given its heavier body and sporty suspension setup, rear suspension components such as trailing arm bushes and shocks can wear prematurely. Owners report clunking noises and reduced ride comfort, especially on rough roads or after higher mileage.
As with many MINI engines, oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket are common. These can cause oil to drip onto the serpentine belt, leading to belt degradation and potential engine bay contamination.
Some Paceman models experience electric power steering failures or intermittent stiffness in the steering. This is often due to a faulty power steering motor or low-voltage issues, and may require replacement of the motor or battery.
Owners frequently report rattles and squeaks from the dashboard and door trims. The sportier suspension and less rigid 3-door body may contribute to cabin noise over time, especially in early-build models.
Some Paceman vehicles suffer from poor door seal insulation, which can result in water entering the cabin during heavy rain or car washes. This is more common in models that are parked outside or driven in wet climates.
Automatic variants can sometimes exhibit slow gear changes or hesitation when shifting, particularly during stop-start traffic. This is often related to transmission software calibration or early wear on the valve body.
